Last Thursday I was able to address the area gang issue with the Pitt Community College Association of Educational Office Professionals, Inc., as part of their regular professional development program. I want to thank their president, Ida Albright, for the opportunity to address such an important issue with such a receptive and informed audience. Several suggestions warrant favorable consideration and I hope to unveil a new initiative soon with their help.
My presentation is just one part of our department's program to combat the growing gang/drug problem in the area. Although Winterville enjoys a remarkably low crime rate, the effects of gangs and drugs in the area continue to encroach into our own schools and neighborhoods. It is a matter of the highest concern to me and other area law enforcement executives.
We continue to receive excellent support from Sheriff Mac Manning and his deputies who work diligently with us in gang and drug suppression operations. Recently we initiated an officer exchange program with the Grifton Police Department that will enhance our officers' ability to familiarize themselves with and exchange information regarding gang/drug activities that cross jurisdictional lines.
However, the critical aspect of the fight against crime remains the strong support and cooperation of area citizens. That is why presentations to the public or special interest groups are so important. When we educate the public on the problem before it becomes entrenched we stand the best chance of keeping it from affecting our children, businesses and neighborhoods. As with most any problem, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
I encourage citizens to become involved in their community and make the difference in our fight against gangs/drugs. Every citizen has something special to offer that can help. It may be mentoring in the schools, joining a citizen's action committee or starting a social group for kids in your area. Contact your local law enforcement agency to find out how you can help. If you'd like a presentation on gangs/drugs or any other topic of interest please contact me at 756-1105.
