Church and Police Team Up for Kids

Volunteers from Greenville’s Community Christian Church and the Winterville Police Department joined together today to rehabilitate one of the “Kids and Cops” playgrounds built two years ago in the Maplewood Apartments area.
The project began at 8:30 a.m. with police volunteers removing an abandoned 15’ steel “I” beam. Glass broken against the beam littered the wooded area behind the playground and posed a continuous hazard. Police volunteers raked the woods of all the glass and dangerous debris and used a donated “Bobcat” front-end loader to hoist the half-buried beam and move it to the road where waiting Winterville Public Works employees removed it. Greenville Ready Mixed Concrete of Winterville also donated a dump truck load of sand that was used to re-surface the playground.

At 10 a.m. a team of church volunteers joined officers to move the sand, replace damaged fencing and refurbish the playground equipment. The project, subsidized by the Winterville Community Police Association, was concluded at 2:30 p.m. just in time for returning school children to enjoy their new, safe play area once again.

Any churches or organizations interested in partnering with the Winterville Police Department in community improvement projects are encouraged to contact the department at 756-1105.
