Fugitive Foiled by Childhood Fingerprints
An off-duty Winterville police officer shopping at the Winterville Auto Zone last Sunday afternoon overheard a sales clerk talking to a man who identified himself as Isrrael Angel. Ofcr Corey Dixon recognized the individual as the man who was wanted for a December 2004 felony hit and run who had fled the area after warrants were issued for his arrest. Ofcr Dixon discreetly contacted his department and followed the fugitive in his own car from the store until on-duty, uniformed officers were able to detain the suspect on a traffic stop on NC 11 near Ayden.
The suspect claimed he had fogotten his driver's license, provided officers with false identification information and was arrested for operating a motor vehicle without being a licensed driver. Unfortunately, a subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a child I.D. kit containing a fingerprint card with his name on it taken about ten years earlier.
Angel was transported to the Pitt County Dentention Center where he was subsequently charged for the 2004 felony hit and run, driving while impaired, five counts of failure to appear and providing fictitious information. Angel remains jailed under $10,000 secured bond.
